Frequently Asked Questions
Why was Reach Out for Schools formed?
The organizers of Reach Out for Schools believe that the future health and economic strength of our communities and our country depend on the successful education of our children. The groundwork is laid in our schools, but our schools are often lacking in resources they need to achieve. We believe we can help best by getting resources to primary and secondary (elementary through high) schools.
Why does Reach Out for Schools have members?
The organizers of Reach Out for Schools chose a membership form of organization to (1) develop a long-term source of funds to support our efforts, (2) develop a potential pool of volunteers to further organization activities, and to (3) minimize the cost of raising funds.
Why does Reach Out for Schools work with Adopt-a-Classroom?
The average teacher spends up to $800 a year of their own money for classroom supplies. Adopt-a-Classroom was set up to relieve teachers of some of that burden. The full amount of Adopt-a-Classroom donations goes to support each class we adopt. By donating to Adopt-a-Classroom, we will be able to focus the majority of our volunteer energy on fund raising. As we grow in membership and resources, we hope to be able to provide more independent support of schools and school programs beyond Adopt-a-Classroom's current mission.
How does Reach Out for Schools decide which schools to help?
The Board of Directors periodically analyzes where our members are concentrated around the country. Based on the funds available, the Board chooses schools, classrooms, and programs in these communities. Recommendations from our members and Adopt-a-Classroom also influence the selection of individual schools and classrooms.
Where does the money go?
Virtually all money we receive goes directly to support schools and education. We can do this because we have no paid employees. Also, most of the business services and supplies we need to support our operations (record keeping, accounting, clerical support, mail, email, web site, etc.) are provided without cost to us by our business supporters and volunteers. We hope to be able to operate in this way for the foreseeable future.
Is a donation to Reach Out for Schools tax deductible?
Yes. Reach Out for Schools was awarded 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status by the IRS in May 2006, retroative to the date of incorporation in 2005.
Does Reach Out for Schools have employees?
No. Everyone involved with Reach Out for Schools works on a voluntary basis.
Does Reach Out for Schools accept direct requests for assistance from schools, teachers, and other groups supporting education?
